Castle Wall Display Panels
Here’s a preview of a project that is coming soon. I am just finishing up the final details before making them available on my Etsy site.
Inspired by the “Wizarding World” I have created this one or two piece display to replicate the architectural salvage look of an aged stone castle wall.
These highly detailed panels include resin “rafter tales” and are meant to display magic wands, swords, armor, jewelry or unique collections of any kind. Use your imagination! Below are some of the steps necessary to bring this project to life.
the castle wall is roughed out
Roughing out the shape and layout.
Inspired by a Gloucester Cathedral, I began with a stylized medieval layout.
From there , I began to carve the pillars and stone from the foam base.
in good shape
Carving the Pillar Details.
I roughed out the curve of the pillars with the bandsaw and proceeded to shape them by hand utilizing a shaper block created from scrap wood.
After carving the pillar bases, the layers are glued up.
Carving and gluing foam is rather messy, but very satisfying!
Together Again
After months of on and off work, the center stone and pillar parts are reassembled and the upper and lower panels are fitted.
Abracadabra
While not as easy as waving a magic wand, the carved panels finally show my intention for their creation.
Versatility
Half way through the upper section , I realized I needed to add this lower panel in order to create a truly versatile display platform.
Happy with the proof of concept, now on to molding .
Brushing up on my mold making
The panels are first set up on melamine boards. Next I began brushing on the Rebound 25 platinum silicone mold material. It takes a lot of time as well as multiple layers to achieve the proper thickness.
Support Shell
After an overnight full cure, the silicone is trimmed and the fiberglass support shell is begun .
Incredibly messy and nasty, the layers of epoxy and fiberglass matte are layered to create the shell.
I added support with Freeform Air, an epoxy putty that once mixed becomes rock hard
Finished upper mold and Shell
Weeks in the making , the upper section mold and support shell are finally completed and ready to be used for the first resin and foam casting.
Time to start the process over and create the mold for the lower panel.
Coming very soon: the completed castle wall display panels.
At the top of this post is a teaser photo of the first piece completed in stone textured resin and foam.
I have thoroughly enjoyed building this particular project and I can’t wait to share it!
More soon!
