Enola Gay

On the morning of August 6, 1945 history brought together the B-29 Bomber Enola Gay and the closest guarded secret of the Second World War, The Manhattan Project .

The events of that day changed both the outcome of the war and the world forever .

The flight commander and Pilot Colonel Paul Tibbits had named the Gleaming Boeing B-29 after his mother. The pressurized high altitude bomber and its distinguished crew had been chosen for this early morning top secret mission. Not knowing what to expect they were forever changed by the events of the day.

In the decades following  the detonation of the first atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima , historians have written countless essays and books debating the difficult choices leading up to the events of that day.  The crew of the Enola Gay have spent their lifetimes reflecting on their roles and duty of that mornings mission that eventually  led to the end of the war .

This piece was commissioned by Mr. Ed Kamimski of the Military Art Gallery for a signing event in the late 90s.

Only two panels were produced and signed that day . Attending were Col.Paul Tibbits ,pilot and mission commander and Maj. Thomas Ferebee the bombardier of the Enola Gay.

The first panel was auctioned that day and the second one returned to me where it was placed into my personal collection . A few years later I had the opportunity to have had the panel signed by the navigator of the Enola Gay, Cap. Theodore “Dutch” Van Kirk whom was a guest at the Mid Atlantic Air Museum’s WWII Weekend in Reading PA.

Dedicated to the Entire Crew of the Enola Gay whom honorably  shouldered the weight of their mission and  roles in history.
